Volunteer Opportunities

Below is a sampling of volunteer opportunities during Project 1.

Sew With Us

Artist Amanda Browder will transform spaces across Grand Rapids into multi-colored textile sculptures this fall. And she needs your help. She’s calling on our community — you and me — to help her collect fabric and sew these immense striped tapestries that she’ll wrap around multiple buildings and structures throughout our city.

Work alongside Amanda at Sewing Days events this spring and summer. No sewing experience required and people of all ages and abilities are invited to join.

As a Sewing Days volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Organize fabric by color
  • Place fabric on the tables for pinning
  • Pin the fabric
  • Sew the pinned sections together
  • Maintain the sewing machines and be there if someone needs help
  • Organize the fabric as it’s sewn

Donate Fabric

We’re collecting colorful, non-stretchy fabrics in opaque materials such as cotton, rayon and velvet, as well as threads of all kinds to support the creation of Amanda’s work.

Send us your fabric remnants and bolts, or stop by Monday-Friday, 9am – 4 pm.

How to Prepare

We want to make sure you can make the most out of your volunteer experience. Below is more information on how you can prepare for your volunteer shifts and what you can expect throughout your volunteer experience.

What do I need to know?

Be sure to attend a volunteer training session and read through the whole Project 1 website, paying close attention to the exhibition and learn tabs at the top of the page. This volunteer page is also a must-read! Exploring these pages will provide you more insight into the Project 1 theme, artists, site locations, events, and educational programming.

Where should I check in?

When you signed up for your shift on volunteer hub, the event details contained information about where to check-in. We like to make it simple! You will also receive a reminder email 3 days before your shift with more information about where to check-in.

What should I bring with me?

Be sure to dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and bring your Project 1 volunteer t-shirt, which you can pick up at your orientation session. We will have a volunteer badge for you when you check in for your shift. We ask that you wear your volunteer t-shirt and volunteer badge during all volunteer shifts.

Bringing a snack and a refillable water bottle is also a great idea! We will have a place for you to store all of your personal items at our volunteer hospitality spaces located at the back of each visitor kiosk.

You’ve shared your time and enthusiasm with us, so we’d like to give back to you too. Below are some of the perks of being an ArtPrize volunteer.
