Amanda Browder

Amanda Browder @ Project 1 by ArtPrize

For Project 1 by ArtPrize, artist Amanda Browder turned four downtown skybridges and the lodge at MLK Park into vibrant, multi-colored sculptures. Throughout the spring and summer, she engaged community members here in Grand Rapids — gathering materials and stories — and over 600 volunteers cut, pinned and sewed fabric for 2,000+ hours to create these installations. Project 1 artist Amanda Browder creates large-scale, vibrant fabric installations — turning building exteriors and other public sites into multi-colored sculptures. Community participation is essential to her work. This spring and summer, the Grand Rapids community is coming together in support of her work — donating colorful fabric and working alongside her to sew the immense textile pieces you’ll soon see wrapped around public spaces throughout the city. Everyone who participates is adding their voice to the project, blurring the line between audience and artist.Find out a little bit more about her process and look forward in the coming weeks to the full length interviews.Video Filmed + Edited by Paper Knight Films

Heather Hart

Heather Hart Preview

Heather Hart creates submerged rooftops, complete with shingles and dormer windows, that look like they were dropped from the sky. The rooftops refer to home, stability or shelter. Heather speaks about the rooftops as thresholds between public and private space. Combined with family and oral histories, and activated by performance, her work explores the power these thresholds have in our lives, and become stages from which power can be reclaimed. For Project 1 by ArtPrize, she will create “The Oracle of the Soulmates” — twin rooftop sculptures, one in the center of Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids, the other on the lawn in MLK Park. Climb on the rooftops and venture inside the attics. And don’t miss the series of live performances that will happen on the rooftops throughout Project 1 this fall.Filmed + Edited by Paper Knight Films
